(Nijole Marijona Price)
As a child growing up in Lithuania, I lived my life close to the land and even closer to my family. That's the gensis of my still life compositions; plants, flowers, the intimate objects of everyday life and the glory of natural light illuminating the settings and locations of a simple yet fulfilling life.
The sun rose on what would become my life's calling when Lithuania gained her independence from Russia in 1990. With independence came the chance to travel to wonderful America and all it offers...including the resources to nourish my long simmering hunger to become an artist. Now a proud citizen of the United States, I joyfully offer my paintings to you.
My inspiration for painting comes from the character and stories of people and settings around me and in my past and the classical techniques of the old masters.
While observation and personal history provide material, my great joy is to research and learn to use time tested techniques of people like Caravaggio, Vermeer and Rembrandt among others to get the material onto canvas.
Throughout my life, I have also been in awe of the landscapes of Bierstadt, Thomas Cole and other American landscape masters. Most recently, the still lifes of Helen Van Wyke and especially David Leffel have captured my attention. Studying the techniques and color mastery of these people keeps the fire in me burning.
Unlike a geographic journey that has a beginning and an end, an artist's creative journey from inspiration through composition, sketch, color and brush strokes to completed work offers a never-ending richness of possibilities.
Thank you for your interest and I hope you enjoy my work.
